New Movie Announcement for Smurfs: The Lost Village

The Smurfs are coming back! Sony Pictures has announced new cast members for the upcoming Smurfs: The Lost Village. Cast members include:

  • Demi Lovato (Smurfette)
  • Rainn Wilson (Gargamel)
  • Mandy Patinkin (Papa Smurf)
  • Jack McBrayer (Clumsy)
  • Danny Pudi (Brainy)
  • Joe Manganiello (Hefty).

Unlike the last 2 Smurf movies, this one will be completely animated. From the press release:

“It seems to Smurfette that everyone else in the Village has a purpose – Papa Smurf (leading), Baker Smurf (baking), even Grouchy Smurf (grouching) – except for her.  So what’s the only girl in the village to do?  Go in search of hers, of course!  When she accidentally crosses paths with a mysterious creature that takes off into the Enchanted Forest, she follows, and sets off into the uncharted and strictly forbidden woods.  Joined by her brothers Brainy, Hefty and Clumsy – and with the evil wizard Gargamel shadowing their every step – Team Smurf undertakes a wild journey full of action, danger and discovery, setting them on a course that leads to the biggest mystery in Smurf history!”

The movie is set for release April 7, 2017.

Why Does Gargamel Hate Smurfette?

In the new Smurf movie, Smurfette and Gargamel vaguely mention that Smurfette betrayed Gargamel and that Gargamel especially wants to capture Smurfette out of all of the Smurfs. You might think that it is just because Smurfette is the only girl (which she isn’t really).

In actuality, it is because Gargamel created Smurfette and then she turned against him. The Smurfette that Gargamel created wasn’t the sweet, blonde Smurfette that we all know today.

New Smurf Movie Trailer

A new Smurf movie trailer is out and it shows just how far the Smurfs are willing to go to poke a little fun at themselves. At one point they are singing the Smurf theme song and Neil Patrick Harris says “Stop! None of you find that song just the tiniest bit annoying?” The trailer shows us a little bit more of the plotline. From what we can tell, Gargamel is after the Smurfs in New York City, where they have escaped to.

A few different trailers just came out, but this is one of our favorites. By the way, if you are wondering how old Papa Smurf is, he mentions that he is 546.

New Smurf Movie Trailer

Although the Smurf Movie is not set to be released until August 3, 2011, Sony has released a new trailer that shows much better how the animated Smurfs are going to be integrated into the live action film.

From the trailer we can see that the Smurfs arrive in New York from Belgium and end up with Neil Patrick Harris somehow. The Smurfs themselves look pretty much the exact same as they did in the cartoons except with celebrity voices. It should be noted that the movie will be in 3-D.

Check out the new trailer below. What do you think? A great way to introduce a new generation to a beloved set of characters or a rip-off repeat that should have been left alone?

Who Is In the New Smurf Movie?

The new Smurf movie is promising to have a great lineup of celebrities. Here are just some of them that are already signed on. The movie is still in production, so we could see some changes.

Neil Patrick Harris (Johan)
Sofía Vergara (Odile)
Katy Perry (Smurfette) (voice)
Hank Azaria (Gargamel)
Paul Reubens (Jokey Smurf) (voice)
Alan Cumming (Gutsy Smurf) (voice)
B.J. Novak (Baker Smurf) (voice)

Kenan Thompson (Greedy Smurf) (voice)
Jonathan Winters (Papa Smurf) (voice)
Jeff Foxworthy (Handy Smurf) (voice)
John Oliver (Vanity Smurf) (voice)

Quite a list! I haven’t seen Jonathan Winters in anything new in years. This will definitely be one of those movies where I am listening for voices throughout.

Smurf Movie Trailer

It isn’t very long, but we have finally seen the first Smurf Movie trailer. We don’t get to hear any of the voices or even really see what it is going to be about, but we can at least see a little bit of how the Smurfs are going to be portrayed in a live-action film.
